Availability, Awareness and Usability of Community-Based Media Among Residents of Wukari, Taraba State

Abstract

Abstract

The research assessed the availability, awareness and usability of community-based media among  residents of Wukari, Taraba state three objectives and three research questions guided the study. The study employed a descriptive survey research approach. The study’s population consisted of residents in Wukari, Taraba State. The sample size was determined using stratified sampling technique, specifically the proportional stratified sampling technique to select 200 persons across different strata. The instrument for data collection was a researcher’s four-point Likert scale questionnaire titled Availability, Awareness and Usability of Community-based Media Questionnaire designed in 3 clusters. The study found out that Community TV channel, Community radio and social media groups are available in Wukari, Taraba State, while local newspapers and hyperlocal websites are not available in the community. Also, it was observed that residents are aware of the presence of only community TV channels, Radio and online groups but are unaware if the media outlets help to promote local development and engagement in the community. The study recommended amongst others that community-based media outlets should prioritize user-friendly platforms, accessible contents and inclusive programming to cater for diverse needs of Wukari residents. Also, community-based workshops and awareness campaigns are to be organized to educate residents about the availability, benefits and effective use of community-based media outlets in Wukari, Taraba State.
