Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Transformative, Yet Nuanced Frontier in Development Communication Teaching and Practice

This study examines the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in development
communication teaching and practice. It explores the opportunities and challenges associated with
AI integration, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach that prioritizes ethical considerations
and responsible implementation. A quantitative cross-sectional survey of 50 development
communication educators and practitioners in Nigeria revealed a strong consensus on AI's potential
to enhance content creation, data analysis, and audience engagement. However, concerns were
raised regarding algorithmic biases, the digital divide, and the need for critical media literacy. The
study underscores the importance of addressing these challenges through fairness-aware
algorithms, expanded access to technology and digital literacy training, and the development of
ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks. By navigating the complexities of AI integration,
development communication can harness its power to drive positive social change while mitigating
potential risks. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on AI's role in development
communication, offering insights for educators, practitioners, and policymakers to navigate this
evolving landscape responsibly and effectively.
